Understanding Fabric Blends: Why 100% Isn't Always Best

"100% cotton" and "100% linen" get treated as automatic markers of quality, and blends get treated as a compromise. That's not quite right — a well-chosen blend often outperforms a pure fibre for a specific purpose.


Why Pure Isn't Automatically Better

100% linen is breathable but wrinkles heavily and can feel stiff before it's softened through wear and washing. 100% cotton is soft but can lose shape in a fitted silhouette. Neither is a flaw — they're just trade-offs, and a blend is often a deliberate way to offset one fibre's weakness with another's strength.


What Blending Actually Does

Cotton-linen blends — keep much of linen's breathability while reducing the wrinkling and adding a bit more structure than pure linen alone.

Cotton-spandex blends — our Soft Cotton Rib Collection uses a 96% cotton, 4% spandex blend specifically because pure cotton rib alone wouldn't hold the stretch and recovery a fitted silhouette needs. The small percentage of spandex does a disproportionate amount of work.

Cotton-modal blends — combine cotton's structure with modal's smoothness and drape, useful for pieces that need to feel soft against skin while still holding some shape.


When 100% Actually Is the Better Choice

For pieces where breathability is the single most important factor — a shirt for genuinely hot, humid days — 100% linen or 100% cotton, without a synthetic blend diluting that breathability, is usually the better call. Purity matters most when the fibre's core property is exactly what you need most.


How to Read a Blend Percentage

The dominant fibre (listed first, usually the higher percentage) tells you the fabric's primary character. A small percentage of a second fibre — 4% spandex, for example — is usually there to solve one specific problem (stretch, shrink-resistance, drape) rather than to change the fabric's overall feel.


The Practical Takeaway

Don't default to assuming 100% is always the premium choice. Ask what the garment actually needs to do — breathe, stretch, hold shape, resist wrinkles — and choose the fibre composition built for that purpose, not the one with the highest purity percentage on the label.
